So you’re in your twenties? Congratulations! This decade you’re living is one of the most exciting, special and fun times of your life. You’re likely experiencing lots of major life events, big changes, meeting new people, and building the foundation for a life you’ll live in the years to come. With all of that fun and excitement also comes a need to take care of your skin. Right now, your skin is probably looking pretty amazing. Unfortunately, there’s no guarantee that it’ll stay that way forever. With a few helpful beauty tips, you can be well on your way to preserving that beautiful skin for many years to come.
You may have noticed that your skin seems to be different than it used to be. It might not be a drastic change, but just little things here and there. For example, your skin might feel drier around your eyes at times. Or maybe your lips seem to get cracked and dried out more easily. Instead of resisting these changes, embrace them! Pay attention to what your skin is telling you. If you feel like it needs moisture, give it the moisture its craving.
Beauty tips #1: Find your skin type
This sounds a lot more complicated than it is. You may already know you have dry or oily skin. But if not, here’s a quick and easy way to determine that!
Step 1: Remove makeup, oil, dirt that has accumulated on your face throughout the day. Use warm water and a gentle cleanser. Make sure you’ve  removed all of the grime from your face so that it’s totally clean. Then pat your face dry.
Step 2: Wait. Don’t add any moisturizer or makeup after washing. Allow your skin to just ‘be’ for an hour so it can re-balance.
Step 3: Examine in a mirror. If you have a cosmetic mirror that magnifies, this is best but a normal mirror will work too. Examine your skin. What do you see?
Normal skin type means you don’t see any flaking or oiliness. Oily skin appears shiny and might even feel a little greasy or oily if you touch your face. If you have oily skin, you’re likely prone to breakouts rather easily. Dry skin feels tight or stretched and flakes, especially around the corners of your mouth, forehead, or nose. Combination skin is exactly what it sounds like – a combination of all of the above. You likely have an oily T-zone and relatively normal skin over the rest of your face.
Knowing your skin type makes it much easier to determine how to care for your skin properly and avoid aggravating other issues.
Beauty Tip #2: Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!
It’s a harsh world out there and the environment wants to attack your skin! Always add a layer of protection between your skin and makeup or the elements! Using a lightweight moisturizer that is designed for your skin type will make a huge difference. Put it on your face right after you shower to lock in the moisture and then do the same right after washing your face before bedtime. Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer is one of our favorites for all skin types.
Beauty Tip #3: Exfoliate!
This is one of those beauty tips that often gets skipped or overlooked. Exfoliating 1-2 times every week will make a huge difference in your skin! Exfoliating removes a layer of dead skin cells. We all want a smooth, shiny, glowing face and exfoliating regularly will help with this! Use St. Ives Fresh Skin Face Scrub or something similar for a wonderful experience!
Be careful not to do it more than 1-2 times a week though, as you don’t want to make your skin too raw, subjecting it to be more susceptible to contaminants.
Beauty Tip #4: Build toner into your routine
This is another thing that’s easily overlooked. Toner will help to eliminate all traces of dirt or contaminants from your face. Over time, it helps to keep the elasticity in your skin and keep it tight on your face. This helps to reduce the chances of wrinkles forming as you age. I use witch hazel as a toner every night before bed. I love it because it’s natural and works so well.
If you do opt for witch hazel, make sure it’s 100% alcohol free like this one, as the alcohol dries out your skin. Just squeeze a bit onto a cotton ball and rub all over your face. Allow to dry and then apply your moisturizer! If you want a commercial toner
, this is one of the best ones as it’s chock-full of moisturizing ingredients.
Beauty Tip #5: Remove your makeup!
Seriously, I cannot stress this enough. No matter how tired you are, how many hours you’ve up, or how many drinks you’ve had. Always remove your makeup before going to sleep each night. I know it’s a total pain but believe me, your skin will bow down and thank you in the years to come.
If you know you’re gonna be lazy about it, buy some makeup remover cloths. They make it so easy! Just wipe your face with them, splash with some cold water, and you’re good to go!
So there you have it, beauties! Enjoy your beautiful skin and make sure you always take care of it! You’ll thank your young twenty-something self down the road.
