The Ponytail
Braid crowns a la Mexican Frida Kahlo, anyone? Braid crowns have been in fashion since Guinevere in Camelot and this season’s version by TRESemmé is making the rounds of hair salons. On the other end of the spectrum is the fishtail braid, reminiscent of the surf culture of the 1990s. Threaded with neon or pastel ribbons, this braid will always accent the youthfulness depicted by Beverly Hills 90210, long after Shannen Doherty and Jason Priestly have gone gray.
Still on braids, the milkmaid braid is intricately twisted as a chignon at the nape. With a few wispy strands hanging from the hairline and earlobes, the milkmaid braid may look messy but if it’s colored green, it suddenly becomes ultra chic. Last, but not least for the braid family is a hairstyle characterized by messy waves complimented by skinny braids that shout stylish “Eastern urban” world traveler.
You can either have your ponytail sleek and straight or low and loosely wrapped with leather bands. Texturize low ponytails, give the hair the ubiquitous center part and voila! it’s the messy hair with the lived-in appeal. Or you can have them low-maintenance and minimal with an off-center part and rough, dried strands tied nonchalantly with elastic bands. Or, as seen at the anniversary show of DKYNY, ramrod straight, sleek ponytails with deep side parts and a lot of sheen.
And while low-slung ponytails can be regal-looking, topping them off with shiny gold dust of tiny flowers evoke images of wood nymphs frolicking in the forest. Unfussy hair is always cool, but none more that when there are loose waves gathered into a ponytail with aid-back retro styling that leaves quite a large section left out in front. This beach style ponytail can turn any scenario into a beach setting pronto.
The Wave
Inspired by the 1990s and sported by the “cool” high school girls of that decade, the Wave hairstyle this 2014 Spring season can be easily be recreated using a curling wand and organic hairspray not only to create texture but volume as well.
And then there’s the just-rolled-out-of-my-bed look: soft waves that get a center part to give the dewy appeal of soft skin on a face that “just woke up.” Just go easy on the curling iron to avoid creating ringlets instead of just waves.
The Wet Look
Just when you think the Wet Look went out when Sting and Duran, Duran retired, it’s trending by making a comeback. To ease into the Wet Look trend, Kérastase suggests a center part of the hair done with a look that’s halfway into a wet, or slightly damp, look that has natural, messy waves for a finish.
Or pull back your hair’s front sections over your ears and tie them back to have an authentic hair “headband.” Use plenty of to slick down the hair’s top for that Baywatch beach-y look. If you want the “structural” Wet Look, hardened the top with maximum-strength gel and curl the bottom into soft waves.
