We live in a very polluted world. This is why we should take extra care of that thin barrier that keeps harmful elements at bay. Some people take their epidermis and dermis for granted, as they believe skin sloughs off and is renewed all the time. When it comes to skin, you get what you give.

Our skin is the barrier that protects us from germs and harmful microorganisms. It is also an important criteria that is considered, with regard to beauty. This is why most of us do the best we can to keep it free from blemishes and other imperfections. There are four skin types: dry, normal, oily and combination. Please note that this is designated by genetics. However, it is also important to remember that our skin changes as we age. Here are the four different skin types with tips on how to keep each type in good condition.

Understanding Your Skin Type

Normal Skin

People who have a good balance of moisture, an even tone and small pores are the lucky few. However, please note that normal skin can become damaged due to many factors. If you stay out in the sun for long periods of time, you will need to use sunscreen. Make sure that the brand you choose is at least SPF 30, which prevents wrinkles and other types of sun damage.

Moisturize more often if you live in a part of the world that has cold weather, as this can dry out your skin. Those who live in areas that have warm climate should keep their sun exposure to a respectable minimum.

Oily Skin

If you have a perpetually shiny face and large pores, you have oily skin. This skin type is both bad and good. People with oily skin don’t need to moisturize as much. However, they should also make sure to bring around blotting paper and facial wash for mid-day oil-control. If you suffer from extremely oily skin, you should consider retinol based toner or night cream. This will help control your oil production. Please note that there are many oil-free sunscreen lotions available, so you should invest in this cosmetic aid, as it will help keep your skin even-toned.

Dry Skin

People with dry skin may complain of an annoying tightness and occasionally, they may suffer for itchiness and/or flaky areas. This can be quite unsightly, not to mention uncomfortable. If you have dry skin, moisturize as much as you can. You can opt for products that contain ceramides, olive oil, cocoa butter and even petroleum jelly. However, make sure you also exfoliate and cleanse your skin to prevent breakouts. Vitamin C cleansers are best as they help with collagen production and elasticity.

Combination Skin

People with combination skin have patches of dry and oily areas. The T-zone is usually the oily part and prone to blemishes. Since this is a tricky skin type, it would be best to see a dermatologist for your skin care needs. If you must buy facial products, please opt for those made for dry or sensitive skin.

Skincare products should be purchased based on your specific skin type, if you want blemish-free skin that glows with health. When in doubt, do not buy the product unless your dermatologist gives you the go signal to do so. If you use the wrong product, you could end up with breakouts or even more permanent problems like wrinkles and skin dryness. But with the right product, you will boost your skin’s appearance and look even better. Love your skin and it will love you back.
